Why an apron was once a napron

The English word apron once began with an n. People used to say a napron, but the boundary between the article and the noun gradually moved: a napron became an apron.

A letter crossed the boundary

This type of change is called rebracketing. When people hear a continuous stream of speech, it is not always obvious where one word ends and the next begins. Generations of speakers reanalysed the n as part of an rather than part of napron.

English has done this before

The same process produced several other words. An ekename eventually became a nickname, while the reverse happened to an adder, which developed from an older form meaning a nadder. Language is shaped by ordinary speakers, not designed once and left untouched.

In het Nederlands: apron was vroeger napron. Bij “a napron” verschoof de n naar het lidwoord, waardoor mensen “an apron” gingen zeggen.
