Eventually does not mean eventueel
Eventually and the Dutch word eventueel look temptingly similar. Unfortunately, they do not mean the same thing. This is a classic false friend, and it can change the message of an otherwise perfectly good sentence.
What does eventually mean?
Eventually means in the end or after some time. For example: “After three attempts, she eventually passed her driving test.” It suggests a process, delay or series of events before the result.
What should you say for eventueel?
Dutch eventueel is usually possibly, perhaps, if necessary or as an option. “We kunnen eventueel dinsdag afspreken” becomes “We could possibly meet on Tuesday” or simply “We could meet on Tuesday.” Saying “We can eventually meet on Tuesday” suggests that Tuesday is the long-awaited conclusion.

Try it yourself
Which word fits? “If the rain continues, we could ___ move the party indoors.” The natural answer is possibly, not eventually.
