Why bookkeeper has three double letters in a row

Bookkeeper contains three consecutive pairs of doubled letters: oo–kk–ee. It looks unusual, but the spelling is completely regular once you see how the word is constructed.

Book + keep + er

A bookkeeper is someone who keeps or maintains financial records. Join book to keeper and the final k of the first part meets the initial k of the second. The double oo already belongs to book, while the double ee belongs to keeper.

And what about bookkeeping?

Bookkeeping also preserves all three pairs. Hyphens were more common in older spelling, but the closed forms are now standard. The repeated letters are not an exception to remember; they are the visible seams between familiar word parts.

Nederlandse uitleg

In het Nederlands: bookkeeper en bookkeeping hebben drie dubbele letters achter elkaar: oo, kk en ee. Je ziet daarin de delen book + keep(er).

Try it yourself

Cover the word and rebuild it from its parts: book + keeper. This is often easier than trying to memorise eight or eleven letters as one unit.
