It was added later because scholars mistakenly associated <em>island<\/em> with the unrelated word <em>isle<\/em>.<\/p>\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Island originally had no s<\/h2>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The English word developed from Old English forms related to land surrounded by water. Its spelling and pronunciation did not require an <em>s<\/em>. In the early modern period, writers inserted one under the influence of <em>isle<\/em>, a word that came through French from Latin.<\/p>\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">An etymological misunderstanding<\/h2>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The two words were similar in meaning, but they did not share the origin scholars assumed. The new spelling caught on, while everyday pronunciation ignored the added letter. Every modern <em>island<\/em> therefore preserves an old scholarly error.<\/p>\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Nederlandse uitleg<\/h2>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>In het Nederlands:<\/strong> de s werd later toegevoegd door een verkeerde koppeling met <em>isle<\/em>.
