Because the ending sounded like a plural, speakers eventually treated it as peas and created a new singular: pea.

A singular that sounded plural

In Middle English, pease was a mass noun, rather like rice today. It did not contain the ordinary plural ending. Over time, however, speakers interpreted the final sound as the plural -s. If pease meant more than one, logic suggested that one of them must be a pea.

Back-formation

Linguists call this kind of process back-formation: a new, apparently simpler word is created by removing something that looks like an ending. The new analysis was historically mistaken, but it was useful, and it became standard English.

Nederlandse uitleg

In het Nederlands: pease werd aangezien voor een meervoud. Daardoor maakten taalgebruikers een nieuw enkelvoud: pea. Het “foutje” werd uiteindelijk de normale vorm.

Try it yourself

Modern English now has the tidy pair one pea and several peas. Sometimes language becomes more regular because speakers misunderstand its older structure.

Would you like English to feel less baffling? The English Juf offers clear, practical English tutoring in Woerden and online for secondary-school pupils and adults.
